New Arsenal signing Albert Sambi Lokonga believes his best position is in the no6 role at the base of the Gunners’ midfield.

Lokonga has signed a long-term contract at the Emirates in a deal believed to be worth £17m.

Mikel Arteta is rebuilding his options in midfield this summer with Dani Ceballos returning to Real Madrid following the end of his loan spell with the club and Granit Xhaka pushing for a move to Roma.

Lokonga, 21, comes in to provide some steel in the Gunners midfield, potentially alongside Thomas Partey next season.

And while the Belgian is comfortable playing as a box-to-box midfielder, he has indicated his best position is in a deeper midfield role.

‘I can play both. I can play as a six and I can play like a box-to-box,’ Lokonga told Arsenal Player.

‘But people say that I’m better in the six position.’

Lokonga becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the summer with Nuno Tavares brought in at left-back to provide competition and cover for Kieran Tierney.

The club are also hoping to wrap up a deal for Brighton defender Ben White having agreed a £50m deal with the Seagulls.

James Maddison is another target but Leicester City’s £70m valuation could prove prohibitive.
