Beijing's effort to woo the Pacific meets choppy waters

BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi went to the Pacific Islands with an ambitious agenda – sign a sweeping regional pact on security and trade with 10 Pacific Island nations.

That plan failed: the Pacific countries could not agree whether or not to sign on to the deal on Monday (May 30) during a virtual meeting with Mr Wang, deciding instead to defer a decision in order to hold consultations among themselves.
