Education Ministry to review ‘Squid Game’ exam schedule amid complaints

Good news, graduating high school students. Malaysia’s Education Ministry is reviewing the hectic exams schedule in response to a slew of complaints made online.

Those sitting for the Malaysia Certificate of Education examinations, or SPM, can expect a new timetable ahead of their March papers, the ministry said yesterday. The review comes as thousands took to the internet to air their grievances about papers being scheduled on weekends or back-to-back.

“The Ministry of Education has received complaints from teachers, parents, and students about the SPM exam schedule,” Minister of Education Radzi Jidin said in a brief statement yesterday.

“We will analyze the complaints and release a new timetable soon,” he added.

Scrapping weekend papers and staggering examinations for core subjects are among the adjustments that are expected to be made to the timetable.

Other complaints that have been made by students include condensing the examination period into two-and-a-half weeks instead of a month-long. An online petition signed by more than 21,000 also likened it to the popular Netflix death-game series Squid Game to illustrate how unfair it purportedly is.
