Fastest Gurkha, an elite soldier runner of Nepal to take on marathoner Soh Rui Yong 2.4 km challenge

Singapore — Marathoner Soh Rui Yong announced that the fastest Gurkha runner had accepted his invitation to join the 2.4-kilometre challenge.

“The Gurkhas are a different breed,” wrote Mr Soh in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Sept 14).

“We heard you. And now we’ll give you what you want to see,” he added.

The Singaporean athlete revealed that the fastest member ever of the elite group of soldiers from Nepal had accepted his invitation to run 2.4 kilometres in less than seven minutes.

Subas Gurung will now be a special guest at the Pocari Sweat Singapore 2.4 km Run on Oct 10.

Mr Soh noted that Mr Subas is Nepalese and won’t qualify for most of the prizes in the event meant for Singaporean challengers only.

“Hence I am even more appreciative of him stepping forward to give the people a show.”

Mr Soh attached a TikTok video of Mr Subas in action, setting the Gurkha Contingent 2.4 kilometre record.

And if the record of 2.4 kilometres in 6 minutes and 58 seconds wasn’t impressive enough, Mr Subas achieved the feat right after doing 60 push-ups and 60 sit-ups.

“Not many outside the Gurkha camp were aware of his achievement,” said Mr Soh, who holds Singapore’s record of 6 minutes and 53 seconds.

He highlighted something he noticed about the Gurkhas, which is their modesty.

“They don’t really go around telling people how good they are,” said Mr Soh. “I invited Subas to this challenge to give him a platform to show all of Singapore what he’s capable of.”
