Fire breaks out at Tsing Yi apartment after domestic worker’s power bank explodes


A fire broke put at a Tsing Yi apartment Thursday afternoon after a domestic worker’s power bank exploded while she was charging a mobile phone.

The Indonesian domestic worker, 36, attempted to put out the fire with a blanket in the Cheung On Estate apartment, but was scalded on her face, hands and shoulders in the process, Apple Daily reported.

Police and firefighter arrived at the scene after receiving calls for help from neighbors. The domestic worker was wheeled away on a stretcher and fitted with a breathing apparatus, while her elderly employer was also feeling unwell due to smoke inhalation.

Both were transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.

The exterior of the apartment unit was left blackened by the smoke, photos taken by local reporters showed.

In 2019, a village house in Tuen Mun was lit ablaze after a resident left a number of power banks charging and left home. According to Apple Daily, at least one of them exploded when he was out. His neighbor who spotted the fire and alerted the authorities.

The power bank that caught fire was said to be of an unknown mainland Chinese bank. The owner reportedly bought it at Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po, which is known for selling cheap and secondhand electronics.
