Manchester United remain keen on signing Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong, who has refused to get drawn into speculation with his future very much unclear amid interest from Erik ten Hag
Frenkie De Jong and his agent Ali Dursun are yet to discourage Manchester United from making a move as the player insists there is “no news” on his future.
The Dutchman remains a prime target for new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag. The pair worked together at Ajax, helping the Amsterdam outfit reach the last four of the Champions League back in 2019. Ten Hag now wants De Jong to lead his rebuild at Old Trafford.
His exploits with Ajax earned De Jong a switch to Barcelona, where he has now spent three seasons. The Catalans have endured mixed fortunes during his time there and are struggling financially which as led to rumours of an exit for the midfielder.
De Jong has not entertained any Nou Camp exit, but equally has not poured cold water on United’s interest – which he is well aware of. He said recently: “You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player but I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.”
Ten Hag is growing increasingly concerned by the club’s lack of progress in negotiations, with a £60m offer being rejected as Barcelona instead seek a fee closer to £80m. De Jong is currently battling for a place in midfield as the Spanish giants continue to see talent emerge.
Sergio Busquets has been a linchpin for years whilst in recent times Pedri has become one of the world’s leading young players. Teenager Gavi is now pushing forward his case as Barcelona look to tie him down to a new deal such is the excitement around him.

It all means that De Jong’s role could be under threat and, whilst coach Xavi has underlined his value, he confessed the finances will play a factor in his future. He said: “For me, Frenkie is a great player, he’s a beast – I like him and I think he can be part of an important era of the club. We will see the economic situation of the club… but I like De Jong.”
United’s want to add De Jong is furthered by their mass midfield exodus in recent weeks. Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard all left Old Trafford after their contracts expired. It leaves Ten Hag needing to add new faces in the middle of the park.
Christian Eriksen is also on his wish list as the Dane faces a decision on his future with his deal at Brentford expiring, despite the Bees wanting to retain his services.
