Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Newcastle United to make moves for former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey and ex-Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho following the club’s takeover.

Mike Ashley’s controversial 14-year ownership of Newcastle finally came to an end last week as a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium took over the club in a £305m deal.

A host of top players and managers have been linked with the club following the announcement, with Newcastle now the richest club in world football ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Former Premier League star Agbonlahor has identified Ramsey and Coutinho as two possible targets for Newcastle.

Wales star Ramsey has endured an underwhelming spell at Juventus following his 11-year spell at Arsenal in which he won three FA Cups and became one of the best players in England.

Coutinho, meanwhile, has flopped at Barcelona following a stunning £140m move to the Nou Camp from Liverpool.

‘I’d go and get [Aaron] Ramsey or someone like that,’ Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. ‘He’s still a good player and it isn’t working for him at Juventus at the moment.

‘I’d target those kind of players where you don’t have to pay them silly money. I’d take [Phillipe] Coutinho too.

‘We were talking about the Manchester City takeover and they had Robinho come in.

‘Coutinho’s not really playing his football properly at Barcelona, and Barcelona will take anything – they still owe Liverpool for him, don’t they?

‘Barcelona could say: “You cancel that Liverpool debt, and you can have him!”‘

Newcastle United are yet to win a league game this season and sit 19th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The new owners are expected to replace Steve Bruce in the coming days and the experienced manager has admitted his time may be up at St James’ Park.

‘I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them,’ he told the Telegraph.

‘New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.

‘That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way.’
