Hong Kong was expected to record around 70 new coronavirus cases on New Year’s Eve, according to a medical source, as residents from 43 housing blocks began mandatory testing ordered by health officials a day earlier.

Thursday also saw the death of another Covid-19 patient, the city’s 148th since the beginning of the pandemic.

The patient, a 77-year-old man who suffered from chronic illness, was confirmed to be infected on Christmas Day after being admitted to Caritas Medical Centre.
