Hong Kong records 4 new COVID-19 infections in Pakistan returnees

Following a two-day streak without any new cases, Hong Kong has recorded four new COVID-19 infections among a group of residents who returned from Pakistan yesterday. The total number of COVID-19 cases has now risen to 1,045 (comprising 1,041 confirmed cases and one probable case).

During a press conference, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Center for Health Protection said that all four cases involved asymptomatic male patients who were passengers on flight QR818 yesterday afternoon.

Case 1042 is an 11-year-old boy who had been in Pakistan with his family since mid-February, visiting relatives. He and Case 1044, a 29-year-old man, are relatives and saw each other in Pakistan, though they did not stay at the same residence.

Case 1043 is a 47-year-old male who went to Pakistan in early February to see his family. Though he left Hong Kong alone, he traveled back to the city with a male cousin, who he is currently in quarantine with.

Cases 1043 and 1045 are both men in their 40s, and went to Pakistan in early February and mid-April, respectively, to see their family. The former left Hong Kong alone but returned with a male cousin, while the latter traveled to and from Pakistan with family members.

All close contacts of the four confirmed cases have tested negative for COVID-19, though their quarantine period will now be extended by one day. All of the returnees were tested at AsiaWorld-Expo before being transferred to Chun Yeung Estate for isolation, and have not come into contact with members of the general public.

In addition, a patient who was previously treated for COVID-19 has been rehospitalized after he tested positive for the virus again. The patient, Case 410, was first admitted to Queen Mary Hospital to be treated for the virus on March 24 and tested negative for COVID-19 twice before being discharged on April 16. On Tuesday afternoon, he returned to the hospital complaining of a stomach ache, and further tests showed that he was positive for the virus once again.
