Isco’s preference is to remain in La Liga and join Sevilla despite interest from Arsenal, according to reports in Spain.

The 28-year-old has asked to leave Madrid in the upcoming transfer window having failed to secure a regular role under Zinedine Zidane.

Arsenal have reportedly held initial talks about a potential loan deal for Isco for the remainder of the season.

But according to AS, Isco’s wants to stay in Spain and join Sevilla for family reasons.

A move to Sevilla would also reunite Isco with his former manager, Julen Lopetegui, who he’s worked with at Real Madrid and Spain’s national team.

The midfielder has started just three games in all competitions this season, although Madrid are wary about strengthening a domestic rival due to the close title race in the Spanish top flight this season.

Madrid are also understood to prefer a permanent sale rather than a temporary loan deal.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is open to bolstering his options in Janaury but admits the priority is to trim the squad.

‘Well, we have a large squad, we knew that and a lot of things we wanted to do in the summer, we couldn’t accomplish for different reasons,’ said Arteta.

‘There are some players that are going to go on loan, they are going to leave, and that’s the priority at the moment.

‘We cannot sustain the numbers that we have in terms of substitutions. We are looking to do that and then we will see if we have the right opportunities in the positions that we need some more help.

‘We are working with the club to find that.’
