JOHOR BAHRU: Two officers of the state’s Malaysian Inspection and Quarantine Services Department (Maqis) have been detained over the smuggling of non-halal meat.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained them on suspicion of being involved in the smuggling of the meat from banned source countries.

According to sources, the two men, aged 27 and 31, were detained at the Johor MACC office at 11pm yesterday.

Johor MACC director Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests but declined to comment further as the case was under investigation.

He said the officers were taken to the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court this morning for a remand order.
