Cristiano Ronaldo trains with Man Utd ahead of Villareal test

Manchester United’s top scorer this season is a man currently playing his football away from Old Trafford.

Andreas Pereira remains on the club’s books, but has been sent out on loan once again, this time to Flamengo.

Back in his homeland the midfielder has flourished, scoring five times – one more than Cristiano Ronaldo has managed in the Premier League.

The Portuguese sensation has come up with several big goals since returning to Old Trafford back in the summer, but has still been outscored in the league by a man who doesn’t even play as a forward.

Pereira has struggled for several years to make it in United’s first-team and, as a result, has sought opportunities elsewhere.

He’s enjoyed loan spells at Lazio and Valencia in recent years and his future beyond this year remains uncertain.

Andreas Pereira has flourished during his loan spell at Flamengo

His goalscoring exploits will be doing his ambitions no harm though, especially with change in the Old Trafford dugout allowing players to work with a clean slate.

Ronaldo, it is worth noting, has scored more than Pereira across all competitions.

United’s No 7 has scored five times in the Champions League, taking his overall total for the season to nine.

In the league he has been supported by the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, who have also scored four times each.

It has been conceding goals that has been the main issue for United however – and eventually contributed to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

The Red Devils currently have a negative goal difference after 12 games this season.

Pereira’s impressive form in Brazil may see Flamengo seek a permanent move, which could test United’s resolve.

The playmaker’s father recently admitted he thinks it will be “difficult” for the loanee to return to Manchester.

“I think that today is the best moment in his career, not only on the field, but in the locker room, in the club,” Marcos Pereira told Esporte Espetacular.

“In today’s conditions, I think it’s difficult for him to return to Europe, in case Flamengo wants to keep him.”

Pereira’s playing style means he would be battling with the likes of Fernandes for a regular starting role.

The Portuguese star has been a leading light for the club since signing from Sporting Lisbon and has often been one of the first names on the team sheet.

His presence has also hampered Donny van de Beek, who has rarely featured since joining from Ajax last summer.

Playing more than one No 10 is rarely done which could force several of United’s players to consider their options in the new manager, whoever that may be, still fancies Fernandes as his playmaker.
