Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly both initiated contact to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba and look set to beat Arsenal to his signature.

The Burkina Faso centre-back, 22, enjoyed an impressive season in the Bundesliga and has earned admiring glances from the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the centre-half, who has just completed his first full season with Leverkusen after signing for them in January 2020.

However, according, to Sport Bild, their hopes of landing him have been diminished by an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League.

Tapsoba is more keen on a move to United or Chelsea, although the two clubs may not make a formal bid until next summer.

Thomas Tuchel is keen to make improvements to this defence this summer and his influence is said to have strengthened following the club’s Champions League win over Manchester City.

But a move for Tapsoba may develop later in the summer, should they fail to land other defensive targets.

Arsenal were hoping to land a centre-back this summer following the departure of David Luiz, although Tapsoba’s reported £51million price tag could be a big stumbling block.

When quizzed on Arsenal’s reported interest in Burkina Faso international Tapsoba, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes insisted he is set to stay at the Bundesliga club.

‘Edmond should also play a very important role for us next season,’ Rolfes told BILD.
