Maskless man arrested in connection with attacking Hong Kong McDonald’s employee released on bail


A man suspected of attacking a McDonald’s employee after he was asked to wear a mask was released on bail of $5,000 following a court appearance Friday.

The 25-year-old unemployed man, surnamed Cheung, faces one count of criminal damage and one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was arrested yesterday in connection with an assault incident that took place in a McDonald’s outlet in Tuen Mun on Tuesday.

In a video that circulated on social media, a man in a black t-shirt is seen swearing at a McDonald’s worker after being told to put on a mask. Suddenly, he pushes the cash register to the floor and stalks behind the counter, punching the worker several times before knocking him to the floor. He continues attacking him and kicks him across the face, injuring his left arm and left eye.

Local media reports that the attacker is a suspected triad member.

A 26-year-old man who drove the van the attacker escaped in, and a 26-year-old registered owner of the van, has also been apprehended. The van owner is reportedly the attacker’s brother.

In a statement posted on Facebook Thursday, McDonald’s said the injured worker has been discharged from hospital and is now resting.

“McDonald’s Hong Kong has all along attached great importance to the health and safety of its customers and employees, and will continue to fully cooperate with the government’s measures,” the restaurant said, adding that it hopes such incident does not happen again.

As part of his bail conditions, the attacker is not to leave Hong Kong or return to the Tuen Mun McDonald’s outlet. He must also report to police twice a week, according to HK01.
