MEP reveals two Brexit scenarios 'terrify' the EU and will 'do whatever possible' to stop

Britain is under a month away from a general election on December 12, after Boris Johnson insisted a public vote was needed to break the Brexit deadlock in the House of Commons. Despite the ongoing election campaign underway in the UK, Brexit Party MEP Louis Stedman-Bryce has revealed two things the European Union are “absolutely terrified of” when the UK does eventually leave the bloc. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Stedman-Bryce said: “There are two things to remember about the EU. I’m not talking about the MEPs’ I am talking about the Commission and the Council here.

“There are two things they are absolutely terrified of. First of all, they are absolutely terrified of being blamed for no deal. They are petrified of that because they know there will be repercussions for that.

“The other thing, they are terrified of the UK leaving and becoming a thriving nation. Which they know we can. We can compete with them.

“They don’t want that to happen because it is going to damage their economy, but it is also going to make people stand up and say ‘hang on a minute – the UK can make a success of this, why can’t we? Are we really in the best place?’

“I think they will do whatever they can to shackle us to the EU institutions to stop us from having a fair crack at the whip and to become the thriving nation that myself and my colleagues believe that we can.”

During the interview, Mr Stedman-Bryce opened up on the mood of MEPs from other countries across the continent when it was announced Britain’s departure from the bloc would be extended until the end of January.

He claimed some MEPs “just feel a bit sorry for us”, before he added: “It’s a bit like ‘here we go again’.”

Mr Stedman-Bryce noted a conversation he had recently with an MEP from the Netherlands, who was from a party equivalent to the Liberals in Britain.

He said: “It was a great conversation. She wanted to know the reasons why I support Leave.

Nigel Farage

“She didn’t agree with that position, but she understood and I think there is a lot we could learn from that to bring that back to the UK. Politics has become very very divisive and we are not having those conversations.”

Britain’s current Brexit extension is in place until the end of January next year – after the Prime Minister was forced by Parliament to ask for another delay.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, Mr Johnson said voting for the Conservatives in the election was the “only way” to get Brexit done after Nigel Farage refused to bow down to pressure to pull his party’s candidates from marginal seats.

In his first major speech of the election campaign, Mr Johnson told workers at an electric vehicle factory in the West Midlands that Brexit had been “paralysing politics” for three-and-a-half years.

He said: “I’m afraid to say that the only way to get Brexit done at this election is to vote for the Conservatives and to hope that we can get a working majority.

“Because a vote, alas, for any other party would simply lead to a premiership of Jeremy Corbyn in coalition with Nicola Sturgeon and, as I said earlier, on two referendums next year, when I think the people of this country really want to make so much more progress on other things.”

Earlier this week, Brexit Party leader Mr Farage said he would not stand Brexit Party candidates in the 317 seats that were won by the Tories in the 2017 general election.

But, Mr Johnson fell short of asking Mr Farage to withdraw his candidates from Tory-Labour marginal seats.

He said: “I just want to say about Nigel Farage and the Brexit Party – it is always a very difficult thing for any party leader to withdraw candidates from an election and I understand that.

“But all I can say … for the avoidance of doubt, to repeat my central message, there is only one way to ensure that we get Brexit done – get this thing finished, get us out, do a fantastic free-trade deal – and that is to vote for us and the Conservatives.

“You vote for any other party and risk a coalition of chaos and two chaotic referendums next year.”

Donald Tusk

In a speech at the College of Europe in Brugge on Wednesday, outgoing European Council President Donald Tusk urged Remainers to keep up the fight to reverse Brexit.

He said: “So the only words that come to my mind today are simply: Don’t give up. In this match, we are already in extra time, perhaps it will even go to penalties?”

He added: “I did everything in my power to avoid the confrontational no-deal scenario and extend the time for reflection and a possible British change of heart.”
