Michael Carrick review Villarreal win

Michael Carrick dedicated Manchester United’s huge Champions League win over Villarreal to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Carrick was gutted when Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday and claims United’s victory, which secured their place in the last 16, was for his old boss.

“I’ve said to the guys, it’s not been an easy couple of days for everyone at the club,” said the United interim boss.

“I can enjoy it so much but still, that result feels like it’s for Ole, I can’t get away from that.

“I’m delighted with the way it worked out and everyone played their part, from the players who started to the players that came on to everyone on the bench. There was a real drive and togetherness and support for everyone.”

Carrick was delighted by how well United responded to their humiliation at Watford on Saturday, which cost Solskjaer his job, and claimed they came through their test of character.

“Probably the biggest thing was how everyone adapted and the reaction and how everyone pulled together,” he said.

“In situations like this, where there’re mixed emotions and we find ourselves like this, it tests people, you find out the real characters, who is there with you and who’s not.

“I thought everyone stuck together fantastically well. We managed to get the win, which is very pleasing because it was a big one.”

United produced a disciplined display and Cristiano Ronaldo netted on 78 minutes before Jadon Sancho scored in the final minute to register his first United goal.

Carrick claims it is up to the £73million Sancho to build on his goal and said: “The goal is the obvious one and for Jadon it will give him a massive boost.

“It’s up to Jadon what happens next and how he kicks on. He’s got all the talent in the world and he’ll have our support that’s for sure.”
