The New Year kicks off with another exciting set of Premier League matches and Michael Owen has delivered his verdict on all 10 games.

The highlight of the weekend is Chelsea’s clash against Manchester City which promises to excite, should it go ahead.

City’s game against Everton on Monday was postponed after an outbreak of coronavirus at the Manchester club.

No fresh cases were recorded on Wednesday but further rounds of testing will take place before Sunday’s proposed kick-off at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard’s side have slid down to sixth place after a losing three of their last five league games.

But with City potentially missing multiple players if more test positive, Owen is backing Chelsea to win 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

‘These are the types of matches Chelsea seem to thrive in, and with City not at full strength, I could see the Blues’ nicking it in an entertaining match,’ Owen told BetVictor.

Manchester United have shot up the table to second place after winning seven of their last nine games.

They can go level on points with league leaders Liverpool if they win their game in hand, and Owen is expecting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to carry on their good form by beating their opponents Aston Villa 2-0 on New Year’s Day.

‘It’s been a Christmas to remember for Manchester United fans,’ Owen added.

‘Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side sit in 2nd and if they win their game hand, they’ll be joint top of the Premier League. It’s been quite the turnaround with the Red Devils now undefeated in their last 9 Premier League matches.

‘They welcome an Aston Villa side that are in decent form of their own. Undefeated in their last 5 Premier League matches, the Villains will no doubt set up to sucker punch United on the counter-attack.

‘However, Dean Smith hasn’t had the luxury of being able to rotate his side. If fatigue is an issue here it may be their undoing with United proving so quick and powerful moving forward. So, I’ll be going for Manchester United to take the points.’

Table-toppers Liverpool will be looking to pick up maximum points away at Southampton on Monday after drawing 0-0 with Newcastle in midweek.

And ex-Reds striker Owen believes his former side will come away with a comprehensive 3-1 win.

‘Liverpool arrive here after dropping 4 points in their last 2 matches,’ Owen continued. ‘They come up against a Southampton side that have also drawn successive matches, both ending 0-0.

‘It was great to see Thiago returning from injury against Newcastle. I think he’s a wonderful player and will just get better and better.

‘With that in mind, I think Liverpool will have enough here. Southampton simply aren’t scoring enough goals at the moment and I could see the Reds winning this one comfortably.’

Michael Owen’s Premier League predictions

Everton 2-1 West Ham

Man Utd 2-0 Aston Villa

Tottenham 3-1 Leeds

Crystal Palace 1-1 Sheffield United

Brighton 1-1 Wolves

West Brom 1-2 Arsenal

Burnley 1-0 Fulham

Newcastle 1-1 Leicester

Chelsea 2-1 Man City

Southampton 1-3 Liverpool

After a miserable start to the season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have won back-to-back games against Chelsea and Brighton.

They face relegation dwellers West Brom on Saturday and Owen feels the Gunners can keep their winning streak going with a 2-1 victory at the Hawthorns.

‘Arsenal travel to West Brom with their tails up after back to back wins,’ the former England striker said.

‘That said, The Hawthorns hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal recently. They’ve failed to win on their last 3 trips there, however, anything other than 3 points on this occasion would be a big disappointment for Mikel Arteta.

‘West Brom got a great result when drawing 1-1 at Anfield, but it’s been at home where they’ve struggled most. I’m expecting Arsenal to continue their good run and come away with all 3 points again.’
