Mother and son arrested for selling pepper ball guns, bulletproof vests online


Police arrested a mother and son pair in the early hours of Thursday following reports that the two were selling weapons and firearm accessories online.

The 49-year-old mother, Choi, and her 23-year-old son were apprehended at their Fanling home, where police confiscated a pepper ball gun, an extendable baton, two 30cm swords, three airguns, a bulletproof vest and 15 respirators, Apple Daily reported.

They face suspected charges of possession of arms or ammunition without license, import of strategic commodities without license and possession of offensive weapons. Both were detained overnight.

Authorities are investigating whether the weapons and accessories are intended for the purpose of attacking police officers.

According to Apple Daily, Choi is a buyer. His son is a student. Neither have known triad connections.

Police said some of the weapons and accessories have already been sold and that officers are attempting to trace those who have purchased the items. Authorities do not rule out making more arrests.

The pepper ball gun confiscated by police are the US brand PepperBall’s Tactical Compact Pistol, Apple Daily reported.

According to the PepperBall website, the gun is a “multi-shot, non-lethal product” that is “ultra lightweight.” The semiautomatic retails for US$399.99 online.

Possession of a pepper ball gun is illegal in Hong Kong, where it is considered a firearm.
