Whether they’re soft or crunchy, large or small, salty or cheesy, Pretzels are a delicious treat. Here are some fun facts to celebrate National Pretzel Day.
Monday is a day to save some dough on twisted treats.
It’s the lesser-known made-up food holiday of National Pretzel Day and pretzel franchises and businesses nationwide are celebrating the salty made-up food holiday by giving away pretzels and other discounted treats.
The day to honor the knotted treat began in 1983 by then-U.S. Rep. Robert Walker of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Twenty years later in 2003, then-Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell made it official when he declared April 26 as National Pretzel Day.
Fast-food chain Wendy’s kicks off a deal on its Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger Monday that continues through May 23.

Pretzel Day free pretzels and deals
Here are the deals and freebies, available Monday at participating locations, unless otherwise noted. To be on the safe side, check with your closest location before heading out as supplies are limited. Some offers require you to have a mobile app.
Auntie Anne’s: Get one Original or Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Monday with an offer on the chain’s Pretzel Perks app Monday. You need to sign up on the app to receive and redeem the offer but no purchase is necessary. According to the fine print, online and app order redemptions are subject to a $0.35 service fee and sales taxes but in-store redemption is not subject to the fee. There will also be prizes through contests on Instagram Monday through April 30 and no delivery fee on orders more than $12 when ordered through the app.
Pretzelmaker: Get a free salted or unsalted pretzel at Pretzelmaker Monday. App members also get double rewards Monday.
Snyder’s of Hanover: The brand is giving away 1,000 free Crave Kits on Instagram. To get one you need to follow Snyder’s of Hanover on Instagram @Snyders_hanover and tag your “boldest friend” in the comments section of the giveaway post Monday. Winners will be selected at random to be eligible for free pretzels.
Sonic Drive-In: Through May 2, get a $1 Soft Pretzel Twist when you order online or in the chain’s app. While supplies last.
Wendy’s: Through May 23, buy one Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger, get one for $1 with the chain’s mobile app. A la carte only.
Wetzel’s Pretzels: All guests can get a free pretzel after 3 p.m. Monday.
