Nemanja Vidic is not convinced Harry Kane is the ideal striker for Manchester United and believes the club should also be looking to bring in another centre-half this summer.

United will make signing a new striker priority this summer Napoli star Victor Osimhen, Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos and Kane all options under consideration at Old Trafford.

The Tottenham star will have just one year left on his contract this summer and while the north London side are adamant he will not be sold, his future at the club looks more uncertain than ever.

Appearing alongside his old United teammate on Rio Ferdinand Presents Five, Vidic stressed the importance of his former side building a strong spine for years to come, with a new striker key to those plans.

But when quizzed on the possibly of Kane joining the club, the former Serbia international suggested a striker younger than Kane, who will turn 30 this summer, would be a better solution.

‘If you ask me, honestly, it’s not just a striker,’ Vidic said. ‘I think definitely the players who win the title are the players playing in the middle, the striker, the midfielder and two central defenders.

‘Everything else, you can do it. This is the heart of the team. I think we can still strengthen that. I think the striker is the toughest question you can ask me. I don’t know.

With former teammate Ferdinand asking if Kane could be the answer, Vidic answered: ‘I will not buy the striker if I am not sure, 100 per cent.’ Pushed on Kane again, he added: ‘For how much money? How old is he?

‘He is a top striker for the last 10 years and he will score the goals but definitely I will go for other options. Whatever are other options, I will go for other options.

‘There is a way to have a striker for many years. The club has to think for many years, have to find players who are 23, 24, they are going to stay there for seven years. Especially in that heart of the team. ‘

In that heart of the team you have to have two, three players all the time and everything else you are going to create.’

Vidic urged the club to show ‘diligence’ in their plans to bring in a new striker and also believes a new centre-half is will be required. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane has been Erik ten Hag’s regular partnership at the back this season with bout set to miss the rest of the Premier League season – although Varane could return in time for the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Still speaking on striker plans, Vidic continued: ‘And I think you cannot say that fast, you have to do diligence, you have to understand what you need and this is a time now where the club has to think about it and definitely I think it is a defender they club should look at as well.

‘Because I see we have injured defenders. So I definitely think we need someone who is actually young, to challenge those two.’
