Newcastle United’s new era of expected riches and Saudi-fuelled optimism starts on Sunday afternoon as they host Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.

The P.I.F. consortium finally purchased the club from previous owner Mike Ashley during the international break, leading to delirious scenes outside St. James’ Park and human rights groups including Amnesty International raising concerns about links to the Saudi Arabian government. Steve Bruce remains in the dugout, for now, and will take charge of his 1000th match as a manager, as his side faces a Spurs team which defeated Aston Villa last time out to end a run of three consecutive losses.

Newcastle remain without a win in the Premier League this season and Bruce will desperate to make a positive first impression with his new employers, who have been linked with a glut of managers around Europe as potential replacements for the 61-year-old. The Magpies are currently 18th in the table, ahead only of the equally winless Burnley and Norwich City, while Spurs sit ninth, having scored only six goals in their opening seven matches.

60 mins: Rondon is played in down the inside left channel and wins a corner as his effort is blocked once again by Ogbonna. Everton play the set piece short with Digne flicking a cross into the box. It’s headed out to Allan who tries to run onto the ball for a shot but has his teammate Doucoure take it off him. He sends the ball back into the middle but it’s dealt with by the Hammers.

55 mins: West Ham respond with back-to-back corners. Pickford deals with the first one easily enough but West Ham knock the second one short. 53 mins: Close! Everton have really turned up the heat on West Ham. Townsend receives the ball on the right wing and comes inside shifting the ball onto his left foot. He flicks a lovely pass into the box where Rondon gets a glancing touch to the ball and sends it wide of the back post!

51 mins: Chance! Everton get the first chance of the second half as well. Lucas Digne drives forward on the left wing and manages to cut the ball back into the box to Iwobi. He collects the pass, spins off the shoulder of Soucek and shoots only for Ogbonna to block the effort!

48 mins: Alex Iwobi has been moved more central allowin Demarai Gray to operate wider on the left. He brings the ball down the wing and takes on Johnson. A shimmy to his left gives Gray the space he needs to send a teasing ball across the six-yard box but none of his teammates can reach the pass.

Second half: Everton 0 – 0 West Ham

Kick off: Everton get the second half underway. This has been a close fought game so far with Rafa Benitez probably wanting to see a bit aggression from the Toffees.

Everton send the ball down the left wing but it’s cleared by Ben Johnson. No changes from either manager at the break.

Everton 0 – 0 West Ham

West Ham have actually rattled the back of the net. Jordan Pickford made a great save to deny Jarrod Bowen from inside the box before Tomas Soucek sent home the rebound and was flagged offside.

The Hammers’s build up play has been pretty good but they’ve let themselves down in the final third, sending shots wide or being unable to find a clinical final pass.

Half-time: Everton 0 – 0 West Ham

45+1 mins: Just the one minute of added time played before the whistle goes for half-time. There’s nothing to separate the teams at the break then in what has been an intriguing if slighty uninspiring contest.

West Ham have played the better football but Everton have had the best chance of the game. One goal might be enough to win this one.
