Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be offered a new two-year deal at Old Trafford this summer – provided his side can qualify for the Champions League.

The Norwegian was handed a three-year deal when he was named manager on a permanent basis in 2019 and he has 18 months to run on his existing contract.

Solskjaer has reached four semi-finals during his time with the club but United have failed to progress to the next stage on each occasion and recent setbacks in the Premier League have left them trailing leaders Manchester City by five points having played a game more.

Nevertheless, United have made further strides this season and there’s hope that with another productive summer transfer window and the growth of the club’s young players that silverware is on the horizon.

United’s board are therefore content to offer Solskjaer a two-year extension this summer but the Sun claim that the club must first qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils are currently in second place and they have a six-point cushion on Chelsea in fifth place.

United still have their sights on the title but the table is so congested that a top-four finish is by no means guaranteed.

The club could also qualify for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League.

Real Sociedad are United’s opponents in the last-32 and the Spanish club have suffered a collapse in form since the topped La Liga when the draw was made.

United have failed to qualify for the Champions League in consecutive years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, meaning Solskjaer can become the first United manager to do so this term since 2013.
