Ronald Koeman admits his Barcelona side ‘lack things to be at the best level’ following their heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spanish giants are now facing the prospect of elimination from the Champions League at the round of 16 stage following their 4-1 defeat to PSG at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Barcelona took the lead in the first half through a penalty from Lionel Messi but were overpowered by Mauricio Pochettino’s side as the game wore on, with Kylian Mbappe in irresistible form as he grabbed a superb hat-trick.

Reacting to the defeat, Koeman admitted the French champions were superior in every department on the night and cast doubt on the current squad’s ability to compete at the highest level.

Koeman said: ‘Surely the result reflects how superior they have been. In the second half we had problems defensively. They proved physically to be very superior to us.

‘We have to admit that they have been superior. They have shown that they have a more complete team than us. We have to accept it, improve things.

‘We know that this can happen because we play against a great team, a physical team, with experience… for many things that is ahead of us.

‘A 4-1 defeat is normally very difficult. I can lie to you but losing at home 4-1 there are very few options.

‘The game has shown us that we lack things to be at the best level, especially at the Champions League level.’

Barcelona – who are eight points off the top of the table in La Liga and need to turn around their Copa del Rey tie with Sevilla – head to the French capital for the second leg on March 10.
