Sabah Pakatan denies new support for GRS as state govt on brink of change

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 5 — Sabah Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) seven state assemblymen have today denied supporting Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) through a written statement, as claimed by the latter’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun last night.

Sabah PH chairman Datuk Christina Liew said the assemblymen have not declared their support for any party through statutory declarations since 2020, referring to their support for Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal then.

“If there are any party that claims to have gotten support from us, it is untrue, unless they are referring to our last statement in November last year at the state assembly,” she said.

Liew was quoted in media reports on November 25 as saying that PH would support Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also GRS chairman, until the end of the term.

This comes as GRS needs Sabah PH’s support for the government if the former wishes to hold majority support in the 79-seat state assembly.

Liew said that the coalition has not yet decided on its stand but will move en bloc.

“We have been observing the political developments carefully in the state and have discussed the matter amongst ourselves.

“We will decide on our stand en bloc to ensure the continued political stability in Sabah by way of its administration continues smoothly,” she said.

The statement was co-signed by all seven assemblymen from Sabah PKR, DAP and Upko.

Hajiji’s reign as chief minister is hanging in the balance as Parti Warisan and Umno are widely expected to join forces and claim majority support for Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal to take over.

Some 12 state assemblymen from Warisan have gathered at a hotel here since a surprise press conference was called at 4.30pm. They are believed to be waiting for Shafie and Sabah BN chairman Datuk Bung Moktar Radin to make the announcement.

Warisan has 19 state assemblymen, while Sabah BN has 17. GRS has 26 assemblymen.
