Sarawak Health chief confirms govt doctor in Kuching under police probe over patient molest claim

KUCHING, Dec 31 — Sarawak Health director Dr Ooi Choo Huck today confirmed that a government doctor here is being investigated by the police for allegedly molesting a female patient during a medical check-up two days ago.

He said the 28-year doctor was arrested on December 29, the same day a police complaint was filed.

“The Health Department views seriously on the allegation that touched on the professional ethics of a medical practitioner as well as a government officer,” Dr Ooi said in a statement.

He urged the public not to make any speculations so as not to jeopardise police investigations.

He also gave an assurance that the safety of patients seeking treatment at government facilities is a priority.

Yesterday, acting Kuching police chief Superintendent Merbin Lisa announced the arrest of a 28-year-old medical officer at a local medical centre after a 34-year-old woman accused the doctor of molesting her during a medical check-up around 11.30am on December 29.

The senior policeman added that the woman patient said she had been alone with the doctor during the check-up.

Police are investigating the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outrage of modesty, punishable with a jail term that can be extended up to 10 years, a fine, or both.
