Secondary student loses footing, falls to her death while taking photo at Kowloon Tong school

A secondary school student fell to her death from the eighth floor of her Kowloon Tong school on Wednesday.

Police said that according to a report from a witness, she is believed to have lost her footing while taking a photo. No suicide note was found on her.

The 17-year-old student was found lying unconscious on the school court just before 9:30 am, local media reported. Paramedics who arrived at the scene rushed the student to Kwong Wah Hospital, accompanied by teachers. The student was pronounced dead two hours later.

In a statement, the school said that it was activating its crisis management protocol to inform students about the tragedy and offer counselling support. The school also called on parents to pay attention to their children’s emotions and provide additional care during this difficult time.

Police told Coconuts in an email that the cause of death is under investigation.

Pictures published by Apple Daily showed emotional scenes outside the campus as students cried and hugged each other. Some parents arrived at school to pick their children up in the early afternoon.

Media reported that the student is understood to have been unhappy due to academic pressure.
