Several areas in Sabah, Sarawak under EMCO from tomorrow

The enhanced movement control order has been imposed to prevent cases from spreading from the identified localities.

PETALING JAYA: Eight localities in Tawau, Sabah, and one in Mukah, Sarawak, will be under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from tomorrow until April 25.

This follows a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the areas.

In a statement today, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the Tawau Fire and Rescue Department staff quarters, Bandar Sri Indah, Taman Sri Bukit Tawau, Taman Cahaya, Taman Golden Hill, Jalan Tengku Osman, Jalan Mesra and Kampung Titingan will be under an EMCO after 78 positive cases were detected in these eight areas.

A total of 220 close contacts were also detected in the eight areas and are under observation.

Meanwhile in Sarawak, Sungai Passin in the Mukah district will be under EMCO after 32 of the 64 Covid-19 tests among residents in the area returned positive.

Ismail also announced an extension to the EMCO at the Tapah prison in Perak until April 26 after the health ministry said infections were still on the rise and numerous detainees had yet to recover.

The EMCO in the area was scheduled to end tomorrow.

In Terengganu, Kampung Pak Sik and Felcra Keruak have been added to the list of three areas already under EMCO in the Besut district after a rise in cases in both areas. The EMCO in all the localities is set to end on April 20.

Ismail also said 208 people were arrested by the police yesterday over movement control order-related offences.

Ismail said 199 of them were issued compound fines and nine remanded.

He said most of the offences were for participating in activities in nightclubs and pubs (112).

Among the other offences were failing to provide materials for contact tracing (27) and failing to wear face mask (16).

Meanwhile, 3,196 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 29,707 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

The authorities also detained nine undocumented migrants yesterday as part of the ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

They also confiscated three vehicles.

Regarding the mandatory home quarantine, Ismail said 170,888 people who arrived through KLIA were screened for Covid-19 from July 24 to April 10 and were placed under quarantine.

Some 1,339 tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 161,681 have been allowed to return home.

Some 7,868 people are undergoing mandatory quarantine.
