Three successive COVID-19 waves have brought Hong Kong’s NGOs to their knees. While the government has allocated rounds of subsidies for the hardest hit sectors, the charities that serve the city’s most marginalized populations have unfortunately been left behind.

As some might say, the money we spend is a vote cast for the kind of world we want to live in. 1ofaKind, a thrift store opened by the homeless charity ImpactHK, has made that vote that much easier to cast by partnering with sales platform OnTheList to sell clothes and accessories at marked down prices.

This month, visit 1ofaKind’s outlet in Jordan to browse racks of designer pieces that are pre-loved or donated by retail brands in collaboration with OnTheList, a Hong Kong-based fashion start-up that offers time-limited sales from luxury brands.

Summer dresses, men’s tailored trousers and even children’s clothes are all on offer for prices starting at HK$40 (US$5).

While you’re at it, you can also pick up ImpactHK’s #KindnessMatters t-shirts and baseball caps.

Proceeds go towards funding the invaluable work that ImpactHK does for underprivileged groups in Hong Kong, including providing housing, counseling, jobs, and other forms of support. ImpactHK also runs the Guest Room, a community center in Tai Kok Tsui.

Since opening in May, 1ofaKind has become an important pillar in ImpactHK’s work for the homeless community.

The secondhand store employs individuals who spent time on the streets and offers free drinks and snacks for anybody who walks in.

The 1,000 square foot space also serves as a gathering spot for the charity’s “kindness walks,” the outreach initiatives that the ImpactHK was founded on when it began organizing volunteers to hand out food and other necessities to the homeless and elderly in 2016.
