Steven Gerrard has jokingly accused Gary Neville of “robbing” him of his friendship with Jamie Carragher after giving his view on the pair’s relationship.

The Liverpool-born heroes played for the Reds together across 15 years, taking home several trophies for the club including the Champions League in 2004-05, two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup in 2000-01.

Gerrard and Neville shared a fierce rivalry on the pitch during their years playing for Liverpool and Manchester United — and now the pair are locking horns again in competing to be Carragher’s close confidant.

Having both grown up on Merseyside and emerging from the academy to become Anfield legends, it is no surprise that Gerrard and Carragher carried on their close relationship away from the pitch too.

But Neville has worked side by side with Carragher on Sky Sports football coverage, with the pair gaining notoriety for their detailed analysis on the Monday Night Football programme.

And it appears Gerrard has noticed how the two ex-footballers have grown closer over the past few years through the eyes of jealousy.

When asked to name his most famous friend by Sky Sports, Gerrard gave Carragher a shout-out — before the 41-year-old jokingly aimed a jibe at Neville for stealing his friend from him.

“Jamie Carragher — he’s flying. He’s smashing the punditry, was a top player, he’s on Gogglebox now,” the Liverpool legend said.

“Everything that’s going, he’s doing so he’s probably my most famous friend now.

“Gary Neville’s new brother. People can’t get enough of him. He doesn’t even phone me anymore, doesn’t text me, nothing. I don’t even see him.

“Gary Neville’s robbed him off me! We used to be tight… he’s robbed him off me.

“Imagine Gary Neville robbing your mate! I’m going to have to improve my banter, aren’t I?”

Gerrard had spent the previous three years living in Glasgow after taking charge of Rangers for his first job in management.

The Kop icon earned rave reviews for turning the Gers into Scotland’s most successful side, ending Celtic’s 10-year hold on the league title in 2020-21 by going the entire season unbeaten.

But Gerrard could not turn down the chance to earn his stripes in the Premier League after Aston Villa approached him to replace Dean Smith back in November.

While his route back to Liverpool may be on hold until Jurgen Klopp’s future is decided after 2024, Gerrard will at least be content that he is closer to Carragher in the Midlands.
