Conte casts doubt over Tottenham future

Having been in the Champions League final against Liverpool three years ago, Tottenham Hotspur fans may have got a little nostalgic watching the Reds take on Real Madrid in the same game on Saturday night.

It may have also stirred excitement among supporters, as they will be hoping to be in a similar situation at the end of next season, having secured their qualification for Europe’s top tier competition with a stirring finish to the Premier League campaign.

Manager Antonio Conte has proven his world-class capabilities in north London and there will be excitement as to what he can accomplish with a summer to strengthen the squad with even more quality.

Conte eyes next ‘trophy’

After winning the Premier League Oracle Most Improbable Comeback award for their stunning late show against Leicester City earlier this season, Spurs have been backed to win some more prestigious silverware under Conte.

Two goals in stoppage time from Steven Bergwijn in the 95th and 97th minute turned a 2-1 loss into a 3-2 triumph for Tottenham that night, giving the team a crucial momentum push in the fight for a top-four finish.

Andy Dunn reflected on that game in his column and has backed Conte to close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City next season should he bring in the right players in the window.

“Conte already has a lot of excellent raw materials to work with, not least going forward,” he said. “Liverpool’s success over recent years has been spearheaded by a trio of players whose combinations and understanding just got better and better: Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. The latter has not featured as much recently but it was that trio that was the attacking bedrock of Liverpool’s long-term competitiveness.

“And in Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs have a combination that is looking as though it could be as productive as any in the Premier League. Whether Kulusevski remains on loan from Juventus or signs permanently, he will be a key player for Conte, complementing Son – in the form of his life – and Kane, whose desire for a move to Manchester City last summer now seems a very distant memory.”

Spurs to battle with Arsenal for duo

Tottenham are reportedly ready to muscle in on Arsenal’s pursuit of a couple of priority targets.

The Gunners are said to be interested in both Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans and Nottingham Forest full-back Djed Spence. Mikel Arteta was short of numbers in both facets of the team late last season, as Spurs reeled them in in the race for fourth.

However, armed with a cash injection and the lure of Champions League football, Tottenham are now said to be ready to fight for both players.

Tielemans has long been one of the best playmakers in the Premier League and is expected to leave Leicester in the summer. Spence, who played in Forest’s Championship playoff win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday, has shone on loan at the City Ground from Middlesbrough.

Mourinho and Roma to enter Dybala race

Tottenham may face competition from their old manager Jose Mourinho in their reported pursuit of Paulo Dybala.

The Argentina international is set to leave Juventus this summer after terms were not agreed on a contract extension. It means Dybala will be one of the most prestigious free agents on the market in the coming weeks and a number of huge clubs have been linked with him.

According to reports in Italy, Europa Conference winners Roma are one of those, with Mourinho said to be making an attempt to keep Dybala in Serie A.

The forward’s wage demands could be a potential issue though, as he is said to be asking for an annual salary of £6 million.
