Mikel Arteta to miss New Year’s Day clash after testing positive for coronavirus

Arsenal face Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday in a clash between the Premier League ’s two most in-form sides, as both aim to continue their hot streak of form.

The Gunners have won their last four matches and have broken into the top four, defeating Norwich City 5-0 last time out on Boxing Day.

As for Pep Guardiola’s side, they have already created an eight point lead at the top of the table after collecting maximum points in their past 10 games.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Brentford on Wednesday night helped to extend that run, which was made even sweeter with Chelsea and Liverpool dropping points.

Both teams have a few players that could be missing for this game, although Mikel Arteta will not take charge of the Gunners after testing positive for Covid-19.

Team news

Mikel Arteta’s side will be well rested after having the week to recover from their Boxing Day clash at Norwich and the Spaniard only has a handful of players who could be out for this tie.

Defenders Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares and Takehiro Tomiyasu all tested positive ahead of their most recent game and will continue to self-isolate for the visit of City.

Sead Kolasinac (ankle) is out, while the same can be expected for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after his in-house suspension.

With this being City’s third game in seven days, Pep Guardiola may opt for a few changes in order to freshen things up, although this won’t be a game he will take lightly.

He could be boosted by the returns of Kyle Walker (illness) and John Stones (knock) for this fixture, but that may depend on late fitness tests.

Ferran Torres has recently moved to Barcelona, while Rodrigo (Covid-19), Liam Delap (ankle) and Benjamin Mendy (suspended) are all out.
