‘Why can Man Utd sign Raphael Varane and we can’t?’ – Jose Enrique slams Liverpool’s lack of transfer ambition

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has questioned the club’s lack of transfer activity, concerned the club have been left behind the likes of their arch-rivals Manchester United.

The Reds moved quickly to agree a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig back in May but he remains their only major signing the summer.

The club have also lost influential midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in that time and while there is still time for more additions before the transfer window closes, their rivals have already been busy.

United have been hailed for moving decisively this summer with Jadon Sancho finally brought to Old Trafford in a deal worth £73m.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have also agreed a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in a move that could provide a huge boost to United’s title prospects next season.

Having watched United sign one of Real Madrid’s most important players, Enrique has accused Liverpool’s owners of standing still in the transfer market, having not shown the same ambition since the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

‘I am concerned with Liverpool’s lack of business in the transfer window so far, the problem with the owners is that we’ve had to sell before buying players in the past – and that seems to still be the case,’ Enrique wrote in his column for Empire of the Kop.

‘The only reason we have players like Alisson and van Dijk is because we sold Philippe Coutinho. Without that, we wouldn’t have these players and probably the titles they helped us win.

‘I believe the signing of Konate was great and it was for the right money, but sometimes you have to go out and spend the big money on the big players.

‘Before Alisson and van Dijk arrived, we were contenders to win titles and after they signed, we actually won one. So these kind of players are needed.

‘Why can Manchester United go to Real Madrid and sign one of their best players in Raphael Varane and we can’t?’
