PETALING JAYA: Eight Thai nationals were detained at Taman Desa Cemerlang in Johor yesterday by the immigration department for misusing their social visit passes.

Johor immigration department director Baharuddin Tahir said the eight were found to be running a business to process and package imported fish crackers from Thailand without a licence.

In a separate operation, the department detained 34 migrants of various nationalities at the same location.

Baharuddin said some were detained for not having valid passes or permits to be in Malaysia, while the rest were detained for overstaying.

He urged undocumented migrants to take part in the migrant repatriation programme, which will allow them to return to their countries of origin voluntarily.

The programme, which started on March 1, will end on Dec 31.
