Could Carmelo Anthony Finally End Up in the Taiwan T1 League?

Carmelo Anthony was heavily linked with the Taiwan T1 League in late 2022. The former Syracuse Orange star played the 2021-22 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he averaged 13.3 points per game. The Lakers didn’t re-sign Anthony after his contract expired due to his inconsistencies and injuries during the campaign. Anthony is currently without a team, but rumors have linked him with plenty of possible destinations despite being 38 years old.

In November 2022, the T1 League team, Tainan TSG GhostHawks, were in the running to sign Anthony. A 10-time NBA All-Star, Anthony’s signature would raise the T1 League’s profile further among Asia’s top basketball competitions.

The T1 League already has several American players competing in the league. The highest-profile player in the basketball league is former Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard. The center plays for the Taoyuan Leopards.

‘Melo was made an offer before the end of 2022 by the GhostHawks ownership group, as per reports. However, he didn’t sign but could still make a move to Taiwan. In his final seasons in the NBA, Anthony was a role player, mostly used off the bench.

Having been a star for decades in the NBA, Anthony struggled to adapt to the new role. Joining the GhostHawks would allow Antony to end his career on a high. He would be treated like a superstar and given the chance to star for the basketball team.

Anthony, a New York City native, played college basketball at Syracuse. He led the Orange to the NCAA Tournament title, the first in Syracuse’s history. After just one season with Syracuse, Anthony entered the 2003 NBA Draft and was selected in the first round, as the No 3 overall pick by the Denver Nuggets.

Although ‘Melo spent eight seasons in Denver, he is known more for his time playing for the New York Knicks. Anthony joined the Knicks in 2011 and spent seven seasons in the Big Apple. He then went on a nomadic journey around the NBA playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony is one of the best players of his generation and has the awards to prove it.

The guard was a six-time All-NBA team selection. He won three Olympic Gold Medals as a member of Team USA. In addition, he earned a spot on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. Anthony would join Howard as the most recognizable foreign player in the T1 League. Other notable Americans playing in Taiwan’s T1 League include Nick King, Derek King, and Jordan Tolbert to name a few. The T1 League has welcomed several American players, and Anthony could still make his way to the basketball league.

For now, Anthony is unsigned and weighing his options. He could decide on playing in Taiwan once the current NBA season finishes.
