Firefighters put out 20-hectare peat fires in Pahang forests

KUANTAN: Roughly 30ha of forest in the Inderapura agricultural department area here caught fire today due to the hot spell, Pahang fire and rescue department said.

A fire department spokesman said firefighters from Taman Tas fire and rescue station, with assistance from Maran and Peramu fire stations, arrived at the scene at 9.08am to extinguish the peat soil forest fire.

“An estimated 30ha of the area was ablaze and, so far, we have extinguished fire covering 20ha,” the spokesman said.

He added that, as of 10pm, firefighters were still working to douse the remaining 10ha to prevent the blaze from spreading to other areas.
