In an interview with Page Six, Smith said she had hoped to launch her career with “Karma” as her first single back in 2013, but the record label she was signed to instead chose to go with another song called “Provocative”. The track featured Will.i.am, and Golden Girls actress Betty White even starred in the music video – but the song wasn’t a success.

To everyone’s surprise, Smith’s version of “Karma” has now managed to climb to number eight on the US iTunes pop charts, according to USA Today, overtaking Siwa’s version which only charted at number 89. In response to claims on social media that she had plagiarised Smith’s work, Siwa told TMZ that it’s not unusual for songs to be circulated among various artists before their release, adding, “I also don’t know who Brit Smith is.”
Until recently, the leaked version of the original song was only accessible on YouTube. However, the song is now available for streaming on all platforms under Smith’s name. Amid all the drama, Siwa’s version of “Karma” inadvertently boosted Smith’s profile and fame, particularly as the original music video for the track resurfaced last week and captured public attention.

She was a duo act with her twin sister
Brittany Smith, also known by her stage names Brit Smith and Matisse, is an American singer, songwriter and dancer. She was formerly one half of the pop duo Brit & Alex alongside her identical twin sister, per PopCrush, but the duo were thought to have split around 2009.
Following the disbandment, Smith was signed by Jive Records to pursue a solo career under the stage name “Matisse”. She debuted her single “Better Than Her” featuring Akon in 2010, and it even charted at no. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart.
She made a song with Will.i.am
During the interview with Page Six, Smith said she stepped back from the music industry after releasing her single “Provocative” in 2013 with Will.i.am.
She also said she was pleased that her song was finally being heard and appreciated. “I’m just happy that people are hearing it and liking it,” she told the outlet. When asked about fans preferring her version over Siwa’s, Smith responded graciously: “I feel like it’s just a testament to how strong the song is itself that it’s stood the test of time 12 years later.”

About the Jojo Siwa situation
Smith shared a video on her socials this weekend in an effort to set the record straight. “Jojo did not steal my song,” she said, hoping to end the controversy, adding that she would never want to be a part of online bullying because she was herself bullied in senior school. “I just wanna make it clear that Jojo has done nothing wrong to me,” she declared.
In the same video, she thanked her new fans for their support and said she’d decided to release an album featuring some of her old songs “for that sort of nostalgic pop feeling”. Her new EP will be released on May 17.
